Answering 2 questions

Almost all the main characters in the stories of Krik? Krak! are female. Why? What role do you think does Guy play in terms of the structure of the whole book? In my opinion, the author not only wants to portray the lives of Haitian Women but also describes how do Haitian families struggle to chase a good life. Since the author is a woman, and gender role is severely differentiated in Haiti, she wants to spread Haitian women’s experiences and pains from a woman’s perspective. Most of the stories in the book have a female narrator who is supporting the family. It advocates the independence of Haitian women in such a disastrous environment. Also, it depicts the Haitian women who live in other countries with the other worries. However, Guy is the person who mainly supports the family. As far as I concerned, the book has too many negative descriptions to the male that may causes misunderstandings to readers. The author likely forces on how do Haitians fight with unfairness and dangers in...

Discussion Questions

1. If the author wants to portray a theme of how do single Haitian women struggle, why does she choose a prostitute, not a maid, or a pieceworker's story? 2. What is the tendency of Guy's suicide? Delivering his ideas to the people at there or self-actualization? 3. Most of the stories in the book have two generations, who live in two extremes. Is young generation possible to follow the same path? 4. What is the focus of the topic "New York Day Women"? "New York" or "Day women"?

Epilogue's Note

In Epilogue, the narrator is probably the author of the book, since she talks about her reason to write for her country. However, it is extremely hard that she has a chance to write because of her mom's expectation. Her mom expects her to work in regular jobs in order to earn enough money to support herself, while the narrator doesn't want to make recessions. As a Haitian writer, she is willing to record and spread Haitian cultures and she feels the responsibility from this activity. The Epilogue is named Haitian women, and the whole book mainly talks about Haitian women, which unifies the style of the whole book in different occupation, countries, situations. Obviously, compared to the other countries and male, Haitian women have no chance to chase their dreams, yet the book depicts how do Haitian women grind in the harsh environment.

Caroline's Wedding's Note

Characters: Grace Ma Caroline Eric Grace is a Haiti immigrant and finally became an American citizen. Her sister is Caroline and her mother is Ma. Grace is a person struggling between the identity of Haiti and America because she loves her mom and her sister. Grace recognizes her sister's way of living in the United States and respects her mom's feelings to the homeland. Ma is their mother, who has a strong feeling to keep Haitian tradition. To be a Haitian woman leaving home for twenty-five years, she wants her offsprings mentally to keep being a Haitian. She couldn't bear that her daughter, Caroline, married with an American and got abandoned. It is obvious that Caroline has a strong, rejecting feeling to the Haitian tradition because of her mom, and she loves America and its culture. Eric truly cares about Caroline. Compared to the strong conflict of culture in this story, the existence of Neutral Eric is weakened.

Caroline’s Wedding’s Theme Jealously

Grace’s mother is jealous of Caroline, who has an American identity and her marriage with an American. Ma believes that if she makes soup, Caroline’s wedding will be destroyed. Caroline is a Haitian. Since Caroline is born in America, Caroline is born with U.S citizenship, which helps her to avoid hardships that immigrants would have. The blood inside of Caroline has a conflict with her identity, which causes misunderstandings and jealousy from her relatives.

KK Blog Post 3 -- Compare Night Women to New York Day Women

At first, the day women described in Night Women are different from the day women in Brooklyn. Day women in Night Women are mostly working as pieceworkers in the daytime to earn little money, while the day women in New York have free time in the daytime, exploring the world. Finding the similarities between the two stories, two characters, both stories reflect the embarrassed social status and the weakness of women, which represent the gender role in both countries. Female were mostly not highly educated at that time so they could not engage in common jobs. Since a majority of people recognized the statement that men should support the family, single mom undertakes more pressure than male. Both of them have a hard time making money and they have no man to rely on. On the way of supporting the family, they can only make sacrifices on themselves to support their children. In the aspect of dignity, women make decisions to become either night women or day women. Effort...

New York Day Women Notes

The female narrator Mother In Brooklyn, my mother is not involved in the local environment and society. She is not like most of the women who are interested in shopping and she doesn't like people to judge her appearance. The narrator is following her mother. Her mom compares the discipline of drivers between Brooklyn and Haiti and compares the other facts with Haiti. The Narrator found that a day woman who works during the daytime leaves her baby to her mom for a while. Her mom tries to please the child by buying a can of soda, but they don't have too much communication.

Diane Ackerman Notes

We Are Listening: In Metropolis, people are too busy to listen so the best place for listening should be outside. Blind people are good at listening to the environment. The poem is in chronological order, from the beginning to the night to the dream, and the author lists several places to search sounds. The point that reminds me about listening is "we imagine". When people focus on listening to something, they will gradually block the other sense organs to imagine to sound. Like Your Face: A poem describes someone's face with many metaphors. Actually, eyelashes become the only part of the face mentioned in the poem, while the other lines refer the face to nature's description. From a small face to the giant world, it is a big shift. (1) What spirit do you want to transfer to your readers? (2) Do you suggest people use the money to support their dreams?

A wall of fire and night women have a common theme which is sacrificing. There are two families in each story. Also, it has one person to hold a whole family. The dad in the a wall of fire sacrifices his life and the mom in night women sacrifices her pride. However, both of them sacrifice for their families.
