A wall of fire and night women have a common theme which is sacrificing. There are two families in each story. Also, it has one person to hold a whole family. The dad in the a wall of fire sacrifices his life and the mom in night women sacrifices her pride. However, both of them sacrifice for their families. In a wall of fire, dad is the only source of income in the family. When his son’s recitation of a play at school stimulates him, and the hot air balloon in his working place, he is stimulated to have a try in his entire life. When he jumps off from the balloon, surrounding people and his son are touched by his spirit. It can be illustrated as an indication to encourage people not to be chiained by poverty or low social status. He sacrifices his life to ignite people and to encourage his son in a depressed society.
Night women can be simply comprehend as a single mom feeding her son. Even though being a prostitute is an activity that loses one’s dignity to the other people and family members, mom knows that it is worthy to do that, since she will eventually rely on her son. On the one hand, mom sacrifices for her lovely son. On the other hand, mom sacrifices temporarily to have a future, which is an intuitive sense of supporting a family without man. However, the narrator doesn’t want her sacrifice to be revealed by others including her son. Compared to the public sacrifice in the wall of fire, mom wants her sacrifice being veiled until her son has the ability to earn money. In order to cover the truth when her son notices her work at night. “One day, he will grow to old to be told that a wandering man is a mirage and that naked flesh is a dream. I will tell him that his father has come.” reveals that even though mom knows the day will come, but she is not very afraid to insist on her job because she knows the priority of this family. She knows that a mother should be responsible for her son’s mental health, so she makes up the truth.
