Almost all the main characters in the stories of Krik? Krak! are female. Why? What role do you think does Guy play in terms of the structure of the whole book?
In my opinion, the author not only wants to portray the lives of Haitian Women but also describes how do Haitian families struggle to chase a good life. Since the author is a woman, and gender role is severely differentiated in Haiti, she wants to spread Haitian women’s experiences and pains from a woman’s perspective. Most of the stories in the book have a female narrator who is supporting the family. It advocates the independence of Haitian women in such a disastrous environment. Also, it depicts the Haitian women who live in other countries with the other worries. However, Guy is the person who mainly supports the family. As far as I concerned, the book has too many negative descriptions to the male that may causes misunderstandings to readers. The author likely forces on how do Haitians fight with unfairness and dangers in their lives. Guy has a similar goal of affording an ideal life for their kids like night women. The difference between male and female in the rule of nature is that male always sacrifice themselves, while female contribute for the family or the country in shadow. “A wall of fire is rising and in the ashes, I see the bones of the people. Not only those people whose dark hollow faces I see daily in the fields, but all those souls who have gone ahead to haunt my dreams. At night I relive once more the last caresses from the hand of a loving father, a valiant love, a beloved friend.” is the line that little Guy reciting after Guy has gone. It implies the dead-ending of Guy, but it also expresses the mood of facing death unflinchingly. Compared to have a flat life, he decided to use his death to warn people and his family members to strive to become strong.
2. will the night woman keep being a prostitute in order to let her son finish his education, or will she switch to another profession for her dignity?
From the story, it can be barely seen that the mom struggles too much as a prostitute, yet it focuses on how much does the mom love her son and how does she make sacrifices. Since she doesn’t want to switch her job rapidly, she has already come up with some ways to cheat her son. It can be illustrated by the mom, who has already persuaded herself to be a prostitute. She does mention other choices, but she mentions their drawbacks. “ After he leaves at dawn, I sit outside and smoke a dry tobacco leaf. I watch the pieceworker women march one another to the open market half a day’s walk from where they live. I thank the stars that at least I have the day to myself.” claims that the mom pretty enjoys her daily lives. Compared to the pieceworkers, she has a great amount of daytime to relax, and her behaviors with whoremasters don’t reflect her repulsion to the men. Female pieceworkers begin to work at dawn. In contrast, night women earn more money than pieceworkers and get relaxed at dawn. From her evaluations and feelings to her job, profits, feedbacks, she will hardly switch to another profession for her dignity.
