4 Gods

"Asaka, goddess of earth, of plants, of all growing things, how generous was her bounty then. She pushed a wilderness of herbs, of bush to thicken the underbrush, keeping the trees forever green, forever productive." introduces the property of Asaka. She is probably favored by peasants, since her functions are related to the natural enviornment which is most valued by peasants because of their agricultural industry. From the passage, I know that Asaka always smiles according to peasants' impression for her. As a goddess of life, I expect her to be a buxom lady and always smiling and laughing so that people have a favorable impression for her at first sight. She sounds like a mature woman with a rough tone or voice. She should always take one's fancy and she acts more like a mother on the stage.
"Agwe, god of the sea, of our many waters - how gentle he was then. How tenderly he treated the volup-tuous Asaka. He adored her. Agwe's caresses nourished the fruits of her work, and rained gently down on us, his benediction of the gods.", from the respective of peasants, introduces an imperatorial character that is standing above everyone. People respect him, not only because he is a gentle god but also his treatment to peasants by raining gently. Also, Agwe is arrogant as being a god. "It was I, Agwe, who saved the child." shows that he has not the side of generosity sometimes so I expect Agwe to dress purple on the stage, because purple is a color representing nobility. His tone is always arrogant, not changing by any situation. Since he has an arrogant tone, he looks people down and never bows down to anyone. He has to be cruel to anyone, including the other gods so he can not flatter anyone.
From the dialogue between Erzulie and Agwe, we can clearly see how is the status of Erzulie among gods. Firstly, Ezrulie the god of love, to both human and gods, has the least power to change the whole world. Agwe has threatened her by comparing their power "I shall use my wrath in the darkness and the light of a soulless world. I am a most powerful god, Erzulie. If I truly go mad, it shall be end." If Ezrulie is not a powerful goddess, she definitely would not dress fancy. She dresses like a young girl but she knows the ways of the world and how are the emotions of people. To live as the least powerful god, she knows how creatures think. Also, I expect this character to speak without any hesitation because she is always the smartest one in the world.
Papa Ge is a typical character that we can see from many productions. He looks evil, acts evil, and talks evil, but nobody can affect too much to him because he is protected by the status and the ultimate authority. Audiences always hate this kind of character, because no one can expect anything to punish him. He dresses as poor as a beggar. It is showing that he has the least power among four gods and he is responsible for evils things that the other gods can't do seemingly. He has a raucity tone. When he appears, the melody of the background music turns to dark style.
