Oral Revision

The book is called "Krik Krak!" by Edwidge Danticat.

"Krik Krak!" mainly contains stories of Haitian women, telling how different Haitian women struggle in the miserable period of Haiti in the 20th century and it also includes the author's personal content.

In our performance, "A Wall of Fire Rising" and "Night Woman" are chosen to adapt to a play.

We have two characters from "Night Woman" and two original roles who are Devil and Angle.

Characters from "Night Woman" are Mom and Son and I played Son.

The reason why we chose
- a clear and obvious conflict
- man v.s self, society
- easy to extend on man v.s self
- night woman and devil, son and angel are two sides
- night woman is depressed
- a wall of fire rising is aroused
- creative characters
- everyone is around the conflict
- mang talks related to real life
- strongly connects to one theme of the book - gender role

Literary analysis
- A wall of fire rising is about people and family, and my first monologue is also about people and family.
- Night woman is not the issue only happened in one family.
- So I "call on everyone with mighty and weak", "I call on their gods; I call on..." these lines from a wall of fire rising directly point the theme behind our play.
- Night woman is man v.s self so Son is man v.s society; he wants to change his society.
-Why son cares so much about his mother's happiness?  "He is like a butterfly fluttering on a rock that stands out naked in the middle of a stream; We are like faraway lovers, lying to one another, under different moons." Descripted by mom
-Why we exaggerated mom's conflict in the play? "I can make myself a goddess."
- It seems like an unusual choice for a wife in developed countries. It is the society that forces her to become a prostitute.
- The son should not be that mature, yet the environment is too harsh for him.
- Even though difficulties mentioned by mom and son seem prevalent among many families, but their difficulties come from society.
- Mom struggles between dignity and son's future, while son struggles for her mom's future. Before they have the conversation in scene 4, I pretend neither of them knows his or her efforts.
- A young boy with responsibility is the theme I want to show. :" I have forgotten my new lines. Then Guy said: When people give you big responsibilities, you have to try to live up to them."
- The son is practicing his lines before he goes to bed, which is referred to the context from A wall of fire rising " The boy had relearned his new lines by the time they went to bed."

My role
- Son is obviously positive, having an obvious characteristic
- Son is obviously asking for father's love
- I need to have two monologues because the theme of our play is mom's conflict
- I chose the script from a wall of fire rising in the beginning to enhance its atmosphere
- My role, the son, dresses oversize; on the one hand, I wanted to reflect their poverty to audiences. On the other hand, the son is wearing his dad's shirt, showing his love to his dad.
- have limited lines with mom
- son is out of the crowd made by mom, angel, and devil but he leads the play to a direction
- Since he is living in a single family, he is more mature than kids of his age
- Responsibility and the good expectation to the next generation of Haiti are reflected by this character.
- I deliberately change the role between mom and son so the mom looks more like a son and the son looks more like a mom.

My performance
- I used Uta Hagen 9 questions before I began designing my blocking.
- He reads lines with passion. He has the monologue with passion.
- His confidence and eagerness are shown when he talks to mother.
- I tried to speak out loud, since he is an independent boy
- Since we want to portray a real story, we made everything vivid and canceled hilarious movements or actions.
- I tried to exaggerate my gestures when I had energetic and depressed lines.
- Using the Stanislavski method (reality)
- I didn't move too much
- We performed in chronological order - I memorized lines -> Mom's conflict -> I wake up -> talked to mom

Talk about my mood joining in this group.
A happy and intense discussion of my character, my blocking, and my lines.
Spent less time to be familiar with this character than the other group mates.
I almost made a mistake on costumes, since I joined this group
