Three Stories Analysis
Stress appears respectively in three stories, while people die in the progress of escaping and rejecting from pressures. In the first story, the man narrator escapes from power. In the second story, a daughter and her mom escape from reasonless accusing. In the third story, the father escapes from the silence of people. Dead people realize the meaning of birth when they escape from current situations. Since they don't have the courage to pursuit hope, they are not exactly born to die and the common theme is the stress that eliminates people's hope.
"Nineteen Thirty-Seven" is a story that a woman is accused to kill a baby. She is accused to be a witch and is taken to the jail. It is important that her daughter tries to prove for her innocence because there is no justice and hope under the authority. Also, the authority comes from the boosted will of people and becomes the invisible power denying anything from Josephine's mom. Every year they go to the bloody river to do the ritual, which is for the dead people in slaughtering and her grandmother. " The sun can no longer warm god creatures." Josephine's mom said. From then to now, Josephine's mom relies on her belief to survive, and she even recognizes that the Virgin Mary sympathizes her experiences. Days after, her mom is burned by guards. Under the sun, the heavy pressure from people makes her hard to breathe, yet this can't be denied with a devout heart to passed people and belief.
"A Wall of Fire Rising" is a story which tells a family living in poverty. Little Guy gets lines of a play that is about the revolution of people from his school. When he performs his memorization of lines to his dad, his dad is inspired to chase his dream of freedom. Since people at that time are living in a down atmosphere, it is essential that something is propelling people to pursue their dreams. Guy steals the hot air balloon from the place he works in and jumps off when he grabs people's attention. "But look what he gave us instead. He gave us reasons to want to fly. He gave us the air, the birds, and our son." Guy said. Compared to the lily's quote, Guy wants to sympathize that the god doesn't want people to be born with something. Also, dreams and freedom are things that require people to chase and to pay efforts. Guy considers that the local people are overwhelmed by a depressive and silent atmosphere for a long time. If a play can stimulate one's motivation, he thinks his behavior of chasing freedom can awaken more people. Little Guy is touched by his dad when his dad jumps off from the balloon. Whatever the height of a wall is, people should have the idea to cross it.
In "Children of Sea", political power and violence become a dark cloud on the top of a girl who is named Célianne. On the boat, there is no hope and chance to find the humanity. Moreover, the biggest issue is nobody can pull you from the abyss and there is nowhere to indict. On this boat, Célianne is defeated by the pressure which is called power, so she decides to clean herself and her dead baby into the sea. The stress crushes one's existence and leads her to fade herself away from this world so that seems nothing happened.
