Tom: "There is a trick that would come in handy for me-get me out of this 2 by 4 situation!" Tom at here came up an idea when he mentioned the magician's trick, he connected the trick to his wantings. They tried to nail the magician in the box but he still escaped. The nails symbolize the difficulties and his family, everything is being the obstacle of his dream, he is trapped like the magician but he can't run away. Tom has suffered a lot from the restrict environment, he undertook the whole income of this family, moreover, his mom always sermonized him. He is hardly seeing his adventure from this family. However, feeding the whole family is his responsibility as one of the members, but his wanting to has a trick like that magician is still reflecting that he wants to leave everything here away and to start a new journey.
Laura: "My glass! - menagerie..." Laura shouted to her broken glasses since Tom broke it negligently. There is a premise that Tom is arguing with Amanda. Laura doesn't focus on their arguing too much because she thinks it is common. In this condition, Laura seems like a shy girl. Comparing to end the arguing of them, she chooses to pay more emotion to the broken glasses which reveals she takes those glasses as an object to rely on. The broken glasses symbolize her feeling of losing an important thing. Glass menagerie looks normal, but it bears the weight of her friends. When she wants to escape something, she will take the glass at first station of rescue herself from the outside world. Laura has a simple dream, she only wants to live a normal life. She knows that it is hard to find a nice husband who can feed her.
Amanda: "Happiness! And a just little bit good fortune." reveals that Amanda is lacking happiness and fortune now. She worries about her two children, she misses her husband. Obviously, Amanda is always expecting for the happiness since she always mentions her experiences with men when she was young. Amanda couldn't forget her husband, but she is still chasing for happiness while she is wishing. Her happiness is related to Laura and Tom. In her fantasy, tom has a good career and carry this home becomes her happiness, Laura marries with an industrial man is also her happiness. Both points prove that she is a good mom. However, she hasn't wished too much because she realizes that Tom and Laura aren't following her, which is frustrated.
