A Dog Has Died

TRANSLATED BY ALFRED YANKAUER

The whole poem has eight stanzas, and it has two stanzas for introduction and ending which are using the same term " buried ". It has two different rhyme scheme, which is AABB and ABAB while some lines don't have rhymes. It has a reputation in the sixth paragraph to highlight the main idea of that stanza. At the beginning of some lines, the author uses some adverbial conjunctions such as Ai, but, No, and Yes. It helps to change the flow of the poem when readers are reading it. However, it doesn't use any alteration in the poem, and it doesn't keep the numbers of lines same for each stanza. Mainly, the poem has a relative causals style in its format and the arranging of vowels and consonants. I believe the reason for doing that is adjusting to the atmosphere made by this poem.

The poem is describing the result of his died dog and depicting the relationship between them. The writer is not only recalling his memories with the dog but also thinking about the different views of the lives in this world. He takes some examples of his dog's behaviors in common and changes the point of views to reveal the meaning of being a person or a dog. The second stanza introduces his love to the dog. To express that, the author uses a contrast of his view to the heaven and makes a new term which is dogdom. Even though the writer doesn't believe the existence of heaven, he is still making the assumption that what situation he would meet in the heaven. If the second stanza represents his friendship with the dog, the third stanza would be the behaviors they did in the past to introduce the relationship between themselves. Also, the author highlights a concept which is a porcupine holding the authority. Usually, a dog who has a great relationship with his master would do a lot of intimacy behaviors mentioned in the poem: climbing all over one's clothes or rubbing up against one's knee. There is a contrast in the next stanza, in order to explain that, the author uses "No" to refuse the potential concept he made in the last stanza. Instead of doing, his dog likes to accompany him, which is revealed by some static actions such as gazing at him, always near me, or never troubling me. Perhaps those static actions become his memorable experiences between him and his dog. In the fourth stanza, he starts to change talks the difference between human-being and dogs. He uses some actions that people can't make to highlight his wish to have the same ability as a dog. For example, the hairy dog was jumping out and sniffing away with his golden tail held high expresses his wish of enjoying the nature of a dog. Since he doesn't have a tail like dogs, he feels the difference of the way of living in nature. Soon, the fifth stanza gives a conclusion about how does his dog live in nature that ends with two actions to attribute to dogs which are the autonomy and shameless spirit. It drives the readers to believe the writer appreciates the talents of a dog. To his dog, he doesn't want to end their relationship as the master and the pet. So he decides to reveal his true idea to the variety of species. The ending is ended by that's all there is to it to make clear that something can never be saved and done.
